Do Braces Hurt?
Published on: October 23, 2026

The application of braces is generally not painful. During braces treatment at Dental Design, we focus on patient comfort and take steps to help ease dental anxiety. You may feel some pressure while brackets are being placed, but you do not need to worry about the procedure itself.
However, mild soreness or discomfort is common after braces are fitted. This happens because the braces apply gentle, controlled pressure to move your teeth into their planned positions. The discomfort is usually temporary and improves within a few days. You may also notice similar soreness after adjustment appointments.
Why and When Do Braces Cause Discomfort?
1. After initial placement: Your teeth and surrounding tissues begin adjusting to the pressure applied by the braces.
2. After tightening or adjustments: Changes to the archwire can cause temporary tenderness as tooth movement continues.
3. While eating: Biting or chewing hard foods may feel uncomfortable during the first few days.
4. Due to brackets or wires: Brackets may rub against the inside of your cheeks or lips, causing irritation.
At Dental Design, we guide you on managing temporary soreness, choosing softer foods, and maintaining oral hygiene during treatment. If pain is severe, persists, or a wire or bracket causes injury, contact your orthodontist for an assessment.
