No, root canal treatment is not considered a major surgery. It is a routine dental procedure used to remove infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, clean the root canals, and seal them to prevent reinfection. We perform the procedure under local anesthesia, so you remain awake while the treatment area is numbed for comfort.
During root canal treatment, we first numb the tooth, create a small opening to access the infected area, remove the damaged pulp, and carefully clean and disinfect the canals. The canals are then sealed, and the tooth is restored with a filling or crown depending on how much tooth structure remains.
A root canal may take one or more appointments depending on the tooth, number of canals, infection, and complexity of the case. Some mild tenderness or sensitivity may occur afterward, but this generally settles as the surrounding tissues recover.
